TMJ
We all have temporomandibular joints, one on each side of our jaw. You might have heard it referred to as “TMJ”. It is commonly used to identify disorders of this area. A person with this disorder may not be able to open their mouth wide or may hear a clicking sound when they open their mouth. The jaw might actually lock when opening and there may be pain when chewing. Other symptoms may include headaches, neck and shoulder pain or swelling on one side of the face. There could also be ear pain or a ringing in the ears.
While there is no one cause of TMJ, it is commonly seen in people who have had a whiplash or an injury to one side of the face. Arthritis can affect the joint, and people who grind their teeth can eventually experience TMJ.
To diagnose this disorder begin with your dentist. While there is no one test used to make a difinitive diagnosis, other causes of jaw pain are usually ruled out before settling on a diagnosis of TMJ.
Some treatments can include eating soft foods, avoiding gum chewing and using anti-inflammatories like Advil(TM) or Motrin(TM). Relaxation techniques can relieve the tension of the jaw area at night, wearing a type of mouth splint (recommended by your dentist) can ease tension and grinding your teeth. Surgery would be a last resort.

Clenching and grinding can lead to TMJ. An appliance can not only help TMJ discomfort but it can also protect your teeth from chips and cracks.
Acierno Dental reccomends that you do not use over the counter appliances to ease discmfort from TMJ as these appliances can cause further issues.
If you are experiencing any symptoms fell free to call and schedule an appointment to discuss if an appliance would help you and which one is best suited for you.
